Hakuin Ekaku 白隠 慧鶴 (1686-1768) Zen master’s teaching about the koi
Once upon a time, there was a “Red-winged Carp” living in the East Sea. He had an unyielding, steadfast character and stood out from his peers with his enormous size. “How many millions of my nameless brothers swim proudly in the boundless depths of the ocean. They entrust themselves to the endless silver waves, rising and falling with the rolling sea, playing among the seaweed. Yet countless numbers fall into the nets and hooks of fishermen. They end up on the cutting board, where they are sliced up and thrown into pots to be served as food for humans. Their bones are scattered, their remains are thrown into the dust and mud. Stray dogs feast on their severed heads. Some are dried and salted to be sold in the markets. Their bodies are put on display on the stalls of vendors and in shop windows. No fish will live to old age. How sad is the life of fish!”
With these sad thoughts on his mind, the Red-winged Carp’s heart was suddenly filled with a powerful determination. He made a solemn vow: “I will swim through the Dragon Gate, face the dangerous fire and lightning, and rise from a simple fish to the sacred order of dragons, thus freeing myself forever from the eternal suffering that afflicts my kind. I will thus erase our shame and humiliation forever.”
On the third day of the third month, when the peach blossoms were in full bloom and the river was swollen, Redwing Carp set off from the Yü Dam with a swift stroke of his tail.
The area had never seen such a terrible flood as the one that rushed through the Dragon Gate. The water poured down with tremendous force from the distant peaks of the Kunlun Mountains (Konronsan 崑崙山), throwing up wild, thousand-foot waves that rushed through the steep mountain passes on both sides of the river, sweeping away and continuously destroying the rocky mountainsides. Angry lightning bolts flashed with a deafening roar. A whirling wind stirred up a poisonous mist. Even the spirits of the mountain and the river froze in fear. A single drop of this water would have been enough to crush a giant turtle’s shell or the bones of a giant whale.
The magnificent Red-winged carp with golden-red scales threw itself into this swirling mass of water. Rock-splitting lightning bolts and thunder that lit up the heavens struck him, his scales burned from head to tail, and his fins were scorched. At that moment, the Red-winged Carp died a mighty death. However, in the next moment, it rose again from the waves, now as a divine dragon, the most powerful lord of the waters. With the god of thunder at its head, the god of fire at its tail, and the gods of rain and wind on its right and left, it flew freely, clutching clouds and mist in its claws and brought new life to the withering plants in the sun-scorched farmlands.

Élt egyszer a Keleti-tengerben egy „Pirosszárnyú Ponty”. Hajthatatlan, szilárd jellem volt, óriási termetével messze kitűnt társai közül. „Hány millió névtelen testvérem úszkál büszkén az óceán mérhetetlen mélységeiben. Rábízzák magukat a végtelen, ezüst hullámokra, fel- és lesiklanak a hömpölygő tengerárral, játszadoznak a hínár között. Mégis, számolatlanul esnek a halászhálók és horgok fogságába. A vágódeszkán végzik, ahol felszeletelik őket, majd fazékba kerülnek, hogy táplálékul szolgáljanak az emberek számára. Csontjaikat szétszórják, maradványaikat a porba és sárba hajítják. Levágott fejükből kóbor kutyák lakmároznak. Némelyiküket kiszárítják és besózzák, hogy a piacokon árusítsák. Testüket közszemlére teszik az árusok bódéiban és az üzletek kirakataiban. E bús gondolatokkal fejében, a Pirosszárnyú Ponty szíve megtelt hatalmas elhatározással. Ünnepélyes fogadalmat tett: „Átúszom a Sárkány Kapun, szembeszállok a veszedelmes tűzzel és villámlással és egyszerű halból a sárkányok szent rendjébe emelkedem, s ezzel végleg megszabadulok a fajtámat sújtó örökös szenvedésektől. Örökre eltörlöm így szégyenünket és megaláztatásunkat.”
A harmadik hónap harmadik napján, amikor a barackfa virágai teljes pompájukban illatoznak, és a folyó felduzzad, Pirosszárnyú Ponty a Yü gáton át, farka egy gyors csapásával útnak indult.
You men még sosem látott olyan szörnyű vízáradatot, mint amelyik a Sárkány Kapun keresztülzúdul. Óriási erővel zuhog le a víz a távoli Kunlun hegység (崑崙山, Konronsan) csúcsairól, vad, ezerlábnyi hullámokat vetve, melyek a folyót mindkét oldalról szegélyező függőleges hegyszorosokon vágtatnak át, magukkal sodorva és folyamatosan pusztítva a sziklás hegyoldalt. Még a hegy szellemei is érzéketlenné dermednek, s a folyó szellemei a félelemtől bénán billegnek. Egy csepp ebből a vízből elég, hogy darabokra hasítsa az óriásteknős páncélját, vagy összezúzza az óriás bálna csontjait.
Ebbe az örvénylő víztömegbe vetette bele magát a pompás, arany-vörös pikkelyű Pirosszárnyú Ponty. Sziklahasító villámok, mennyeket áttüzesítő lángoló mennydörgés sújtott le rá, pikkelypáncélja farkától fejéig izzott a tűzben, uszonyai átperzselődtek. Pirosszárnyú Ponty ebben a pillanatban Hatalmas Halált halt. Azonban a következő pillanatban már újra kiemelkedett a habokból, most már isteni sárkányként, a vizek leghatalmasabb uraként. A mennydörgés istenével fejénél, a tűzistennel farkánál, jobbról-balról az eső és szelek isteneitől övezve szabadon repült, karmos mancsaiba felhőket és párát szorított. Új életet vitt a napégette földeken szárazságtól fonnyadozó gyenge növénysarjaknak, biztonságban megőrizve a Tant az elkorcsosult világ szennyeződései között.
